{NCIS // Atonement}
Title: Atonement
Characters: Leroy Jethro Gibbs, Caitlin Todd
Pairing: Gibbs / Kate
Prompt: None.
Word Count: 99
Rating: G.
Spoilers: Spoilers for the end of S2 (Twilight).
Author's Notes: I worked hard to pare this one down to fit 100 words, but I think it was worth it. I love working with drabble; it's the kind of editing I need to do for ALL of my work.
Disclaimer: I do not own anything from the TV show NCIS, not even a hair off of Tony's bum. I do, however, own whatever words I happen to put beneath this. Respect that, and [Donald P. Bellisario, please] don't sue me.

Gibbs hasn't thought about dating since Kate.

He couldn't save her, but he can sure as hell deny himself after she'd gone. He thinks that this evens everything out, and maybe it does. These Friday nights alone with his boat certainly give the appearance of atonement.

Still, Gibbs knows what she'd say.

"What good is this doing, Gibbs? Nothing's changing. You're wasting time being miserable when you could be happy."

Even in his head, her voice made his chest burn.

Damn it. He knows he should be somewhere else.

But, as he closes his eyes and inhales the sawdust, he doesn't want to leave.
